James O’Shaughnessy

Associate Vocal Coach

James was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has been singing since the age of 5. At age 17, he started taking his voice seriously when he fell in love with the guitar, accompanying himself with it while singing. Now, he teaches both voice and guitar, and takes immense pride and joy in seeing his students improve and grow, doing whatever he can to help them reach their goals and maximize their singing potential.

One of his biggest passions is writing and recording music, which he started doing on an old Macbook with Garageband in the first few years of his musical career. He began studying music at CSM, and at age 20 joined his first band as lead singer and guitar player where his love for singing only grew from there. He is an accomplished songwriter as well, having released music he has written for 4 different bands, as a solo artist, as well as co-writing with other musician friends for their solo projects and albums. On a quest to grow as a singer, he searched for private lessons, and worked with a contemporary voice coach for over 5 years.

His genre of choice varies wildly, focusing on the contemporary side of music such as Blues, Reggae, Rock, Punk Rock, Soul, and much more. Singing in 4 different bands as either lead singer or backup, he’s seen every side of a robust singing career and what it takes to thrive and grow in a variety of singing roles.
